OUR STORY
The Basic Balaboosta was created from out of a Sukkah by Natasha Hersham.
“Sukkot has always been one of my favourite festivals. Something about how we’re invited to step out of our daily rhythms and spend as much time as possible in an intentional space with loved ones. It’s tradition to hang decorations of fruits and vegetables from the canopy to remember the manna from heaven whilst we were in the desert as well as celebrate the Jewish harvest festival.
Growing up in London I was lucky enough to be surrounded by beautifully festive Christmas decorations. Each year as winter came by, I started collecting glass Christmas ornaments of fruits and vegetables knowing one day when I have my own garden, I will build my dream Sukkah. I’ve been doing this for years and have accumulated over 100 different types of hand-crafted ornaments - each one more intricate and beautiful than the next.
Autumn 2025, the Sukkah was built and each breakfast, lunch, dinner, birthday, playdate was spent under the glittering canopy with friends and family. It was magical. And it went viral! And still to this day people come up to me to compliment our Sukkah - so much so that many people even told me that although they’ve never built one before, after seeing mine they felt inspired to build their own (!) Seeing people so excited to celebrate a Jewish festival and do a new mitzvah was the ‘light bulb’ moment for me, and thus The Basic Balaboosta was born.”
The Basic Balaboosta combines century-old ritual and tradition with a fresh creative twist that draws on Old English and European style in the hopes of inspiring and empowering people to feel more connected and celebrate Jewish culture with joy, beauty and pride.
